Advertising placement
Advertising placement is a form of advertisement, where branded goods or services are placed in a context usually devoid of ads, such as movies, music videos, the story line of television shows, or news programs. The product placement is not disclosed at the time that the good or service is featured. Advertising placement can go back to as early as the 19th century in the publishing in books and as time moved on its became more popular with films, radio, games and music. One of the most famous silent movies called Wings was one of the first movies to have advertising placement in there. The product was a plug for Hershey chocolate. Advertising placement always comes up when you are watching TV for example when you watch shows like the XFactor or Britain’s Got Talent they always have an advert for mobile phones, get this upgrade etc. Also in music videos there have been advertising placements like Lady Gaga telephone video had diet coke in the video. You also get advertising placements in travel and tobacco for all the smokers. Some TV shows that show advertising placements are The Biggest Loser, American Idol, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, America Toughest Jobs, One Tree Hill, Deal or No Deal, America Next Top Model,Last Comic Standing,Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen. All of these shows show a wide range of advertising placements within television and also advertising placements are huge on the internet with sites like Facebook MySpace etc.
Product reach
Product reach deals with the first of the "7P"'s of marketing, which are Product, Pricing, Place, Promotion, Packaging, Positioning and People. Product reach is something mentioned when you are coming out with a new brand or video game. For example Call of Duty, the person who is trying to sell the game to you will know that it is aimed at adults.Depending on what type of game it is but with Call of Duty it is always an 18 but for this you would carry out market research because that is the best way to find out how to release the game.Doing that market research for a kids game would not apply to young children because it would be too difficult for them to understand that is why you market things to an older generation. You can also product reach online with websites like Facebook. That is a very popular way for things to get across to people now because so many people use Facebook. They would also use product reach if a new Harry Potter film was to come out. There would be so many people making stuff for their market research because they know that Harry Potter is a massive franchise and they know they are going to make their millions by selling things just in time for the film’s release date. The same goes for things like Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings. You can also get product reach in some books. Right at the end of the book meaning the author is selling a new novel so he is reaching out to his audience.
Consumer behaviour
Consumer behaviour is the study of when, why, how, and where people do or do not buy a product. It blends elements from psychology, sociology, social anthropology and economics. It attempts to understand the buyer decision making process, both individually and in groups. It studies characteristics of individual consumers such as demographics and behavioural variables in an attempt to understand people's wants. It also tries to assess influences on the consumer from groups such as family, friends, reference groups, and society. In general consumer behaviour is based on the person’s actions when buying something of their choice. The consumer has three key roles: user, payer and buyer. Some research has been done on the subject matter and it is difficult for experts in the field to figure out what people want and are actually going to buy. A big part in consumer behaviour is how nice you are to the buyer because if you are rude or snobby that is going to put the customer off your product and you lose a sale.Tests have been carried out and consumer behaviour is influenced by what type of person you are and how you were brought up.The other things that match with consumer behaviour are your lifestyle as it also plays a big part in what you buy for example, what music you like and films and books etc. Also it depends how well off you are in life meaning how rich you are. What beliefs you have also play a massive part in consumer behaviour.
Competitor Analysis
Competitor analysis in marketing and strategic management is an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current and potential competitors. This analysis provides both an offensive and defensive strategic context to identify opportunities and threats. Profiling coalesces all of the relevant sources of competitor analysis into one framework in the support of efficient and effective strategy formulation, implementation, monitoring and adjustment. In competitor analysis you do whatever you can to win and make your product or products better and more well-knownyou’re your competitors. I think in order to win in that type of business you have to be very nasty and ruthless to get the result you want to get, but that is just my opinion. The best thing to do when you are going against a big company is to brand your product. I think the best way that you can beat the company is if you get advert on TV. Then you know you have won because almost everyone in the world owns or watches TV and for people who don’t work if they put the advert on daytime TV they will have more buyers. If you can’t afford a TV advert then I think you are going to lose the sales battle unless you put your product on Facebook as an advert then you might have a chance of beating your competitor or you can create a group and invite your friends and make them spread the word around about your product.
Audience Profiling
Audience profiling concerns finding out the profile of your audience beforehand so that you can put across your message to the right people in the most effective way to produce the best result. It might include details like age, sex, educational qualifications, work experience, financial background, field of work, interests, mood, orientation, bias, food habits, religious background, physique, health condition etc. What this also means is that for a show like 24 for example, they know their target audience is aimed at people who like action thriller so that when people are at home watching TV around nine pm they will put on an advert for the show but with the advert they will include all the elements of action which fans of the genre like. For example, they will put in fast cars, lots of shooting, lots of fighting and a high death count. This is to encourage people to watch their show. They do the same thing with any mainstream show and they know from the buzz from their show that they are going to watch it. However, a lot of TV adverts are built on hype and that is what gets their viewing figures soaring though the roof because people are going to think that it looks amazing. To get some of their target audience they only show some adverts on certain channels for example, a Disney programme they are only going to show a Mickey Mouse cartoon most of the time on the Disney channel and for Tracy Beaker they are only going to show the advert for that on the BBC channel.
Audience data
Audience data is a measure of the demographic profiles and household data of the national audience for a television network at certain intervals when something is aired. Audience data could be used as feedback on whether an advertiser is reaching out to the intended audience. Demographic numbers measure the average number of individuals in the selected demographic per household. For example if a show such as Britain’s Got Talent was to come on TV which it does every year they would look at the viewing figures of the show.If the show has high ratings they know they don’t need to change anything and they can keep things as they are but if each year the viewing rating goes down they know they need to make changes to the show or it could face being axed.A show which was axed because of low rating figures was Big Brother, the reality show about a group of people being locked in a house for a few weeks each year. The rating figures started to go down and the show was finally axed in 2010 but the show was brought by Channel 5. Channel 5 bought the rights for 3 seasons. So far the show has been brought back to much criticism and even lower figures. I think it is time for Channel 5 to have a serious sit down and think about what they are going to do. I think they need to stop making reality shows because they are getting boring..

Qualitative and quantitative research
- For our latest project for Matt we had to look at qualitative and quantitative research. The media project I have chosen to do is Super-size me about all the fat people in America and how bad the fast food is for your health and how fat you can get. The film is an American documentary film directed by Morgan Spurlock. The film follows him eating at McDonald’s for a total of 24 days. The qualitative information you get from the film are the good facts and the quantitative information you get are the bad things about the film. Here are some facts: Each day, 1 in 4 Americans visits a fast food restaurant. That is a bad side to the film because people who visit fast food places on a regular basis, it is bad for their health. However, there is a good side to this because the food company McDonald’s makes millions by ruining people’s health. Another fact is that McDonald's feeds more than 46 million people a day - more than the entire population of Spain. I think this is a bad thing if 46 million people eat McDonald’s think of all the damage they are doing to their health. Another fact is that the most eaten vegetable in America is potatoes that make French fries. This fact is not a shock for most Americans. Another fact is that you would have to walk for seven hours straight to burn off a Super Sized Coke, fries and Big Mac. Personally I think this information is a qualitative because it is good as it makes you realise that what you have to do to actually burn the fat off. A bad fact about McDonalds is that left unabated, obesity will surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in America. This is a horrible quantitative fact and again not shocking for Americans. Another fact is that obesity has been linked to: Hypertension, Coronary Heart Disease, Adult Onset Diabetes, Stroke, Gall Bladder Disease, Osteoarthritis, Sleep Apnea, Respiratory Problems, Endometrial, Breast, Prostate and Colon Cancers, Dyslipidemia, steatohepatitis, insulin resistance, breathlessness, Asthma, Hyperuricaemia, reproductive hormone abnormalities, polycystic ovarian syndrome, impaired fertility and lower back pain but with all the health warnings you get, people still go and eat lots of fast food and the companies make millions from it. Another fact is that the average child sees 10,000 TV advertisements per year which is great for the companies who are advertising. I think it is a good idea to sell and promote your product. Another fact is that only seven items on McDonald's entire menu contain no sugar. I think this is a qualitative for McDonalds because have no salt or sugar in a least 8 of their items. Another fact is that Willard Scott was the first Ronald McDonald - he was fired for being too fat. I am not too sure about this one meaning I am not sure whether this is a good or a bad thing as their food does make people fat. Another fact we are told is that eating fast food may be dangerous to your health. I think “Well done Sherlock Holmes” as everyone knows this. Another fact that I think is pretty bad, meaning it’s a quantitative, is that before most children can speak they can recognize McDonald's. Another fact is that McDonald's represents 43% of the total U.S. fast food market, not surprisingly as it is the biggest fast food company in the world.
