Animation

For our recent college project for Steve, we have been asked to look into animation, the first part we have been asked to look at is a person who does animation Seth MacFarlane, he is best known for his series like Family guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show all which have been known to be controversial for being offensive to American audiences before family guy became a hit he wrote scripts for other popular shows like Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Dexter's Laboratory, I Am Weasel, that was part of his contract with the animation studio called Hanna-Barbera.

With any Seth Macfarlane, cartoon series there is always a big family, you always have the Husband, the wife, the kids, and the pet, in family guy, you have the Griffin family, in American dad you have the smith family, and in The Cleveland show, you have the Cleveland family normally with Family guy there is a plot but the plot gets overshadowed with cutaways that make no sense and often are very funny and it works with the show, some of the topics the show, have made the ratings figures’ for the show rise making the show very popular.

The show has been cancelled by 20th century fox many times, because they thought the show was too offensive to be shown on TV but the show was put back on the air due to strong DVD sales the show is often compared to South park which is also very popular but been overshadowed in recent years due to family’s guy success in 2005 the creators of South park made an episode called Cartoon Wars which totally ripped family guy apart the creators of south park have always hated family guy saying they hate the way the show is made.

The show creator Seth Macfarlane has always said the show will have offensive and if you get upset easy you should not watch the show, parents always moan the show should not be viewed by children but the show is shown after the 9 0 clock watershed in which anything can be shown and said if the show was shown before 9 I can see why people would moan I think the Simpsons uses the same joke formula like family guy but dumb it down so kids can understand the joke most of the Simpsons is the dad hurting himself.

In more recent times Seth Macfarlane has turned into making feature films his first big budget film was Ted which a massive hit at the box office Ted is about a young boy who has no friends and makes a wish that the teddy bear he had for Christmas comes alive and they be best friends forever his which comes true and they become best friends what follows is a foul mouthed drinking smoking bear the film made audiences around the world cry with laughter after the success of Ted he was asked to host the Oscars which caused controversy.

Animation Timeline

1824

Peter Mark Roget, who did research in physiology at the University of London, published "Persistence of Vision with Regard to Moving Objects." This book presented the idea that a succession of still images could create the appearance of motion.
1832

Joseph Plateau (a Belgian scientist) developed the phenakistiscope.
1889

Emile Reynaud (from France) patents the praxinoscope .. a device that used mirrors to project a sequence of images (along with a fixed background) onto a screen. It was sufficiently complex that only he could run it. The infinite length tape changed the medium from a curiosity into entertainment.
1895

The age of movie camera and projector begins .. experimentors discover they can stop the crank and restart it again to obtain special effects. Example: James Stuart Blackton creates "The Enchanted Drawing" in 1900 .. a caricature is drawn with no evidence of an artist.
1907

Emil Cohl (from France) begins a long animation career..
1914

Windsor McCay produces perhaps the first popular animation .. Gertie the Dinosaur, which becomes part of his vaudeville act
1915

John Bray patents the use of clear cels over a background
1917

John Bray patents rotoscoping (developed by Max Fleischer)
1919

Koko the clown (Max Fleischer) appears
1920's

Otto Mesmer creates Felix the Cat
1928

Walt Disney releases "Steamboat Willie" .. an early cartoon w/ sound -- cartoons are now seen as entertainment. Disney innovations over the next 10-20 years include the storyboard, pencil tests, and the multi-plane camera stand (3D effects). Disney also promoted the analysis of real-life motion.
1937

Snow White is released at cost of $1.5M
1930's

Fleischer studios create Betty Boop and Popeye
1930's

Warner Bros .. Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, and Bugs Bunny appear

Jurassic Park use of CG for realistic living creatures
1995

Toy Story first full-length 3D CG feature film

The other two cartoon creators I wanted to talk about were Trey Parker and Matt Stone, they are known for the controversial animated show South Park. The show was controversial because it was kids swearing and the stuff they choose to take the mick out of caused people to react negatively to the show. Despite this it has never been cancelled like Family Guy, the rating figures were always too high for South Park to be taken off the air. In recent times Following its revival, Family guy has become more popular as a lot of people think the creators of South park are running out of ideas.

1. squash and stretch
2. Anticipation.
3. To direct the audiences attention to important aspect of the scene.
4. Straight ahead action and pose to pose. Desigining each shot frame by frame flunt action. Design key frames of action fill in the blanks later.
5. follow through and overleaping action.
6. slow in and slow out.
7. Arcs.
8. Secondary action . Supporting the main action. eg angry person frown tensed up.
9. timing.
10. exaggeration.
11. Solid drawing. Produces more depth and detail.

If there's one thing that Sacha Baron Cohen is good at, besides making us pee our pants with laughter, it's stirring up a hornets' nest of controversy. The British comic follows up his uproariously un-pc flick 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan' with the equally un-pc (and, we suspect, equally hilarious) 'Bruno.'
'Bruno' features Baron Cohen as his gay Austrian fashion reporter alter ego, instead of his awkward Kazakhstan nationalist reporter alter ego, but the formula's pretty much the same: infiltrate real-life events and elicit uncomfortable (often racist, sexist, homophobic -- or all three at once) reactions from folks who aren't in on the joke.
It's no surprise, really, that Baron Cohen's antics are the cause of oodles of controversy, lawsuits and embarrassment. Here's a rundown of the contention caused by the movie and its star -- before it's even hit theaters.

One of the most controversial and discussed films on S & A has defintely been the raw mockumenatry (or is it a documentary? - there's still a difference of opinion) movie Snow On Tha Bluff. You can search S & A to find the various items we've posted about it, and numerous comments it has received. The film is, no doubt, an indie sucess; and now the producer of Bluff, Chris Knittel, and the director, Damon Russell, have a new documentary film project which they are currently casting for. The premise for their new film project clearly deals with American soliders who have served in either Iraq or Afghanistan, their experiences there and the lasting effects.

Kim Jong-Il's Ashes
Although nowhere near as ballsy as some of his previous exploits, Cohen pouring ‘Kim Jong-Il’s ashes’ over Ryan Seacrest (think a less dignified Dermot O’Leary) on the Oscars red carpet managed to generate a lot of controversy because… well… it’s the Oscars – the one time of the year when you’re almost required by law to sit in your house and fawn over how attractive rich people are.
My favourite part of the video is not Cohen, dress in his ‘The Dictator’ garb, but Kelly Osbourne, who proclaims that Seacrest is the “Chosen One” whilst what can only be described as a human/horse hybrid stands beside her, smiling.

Ali G Compares Abortion To Burger King
Surely you should try something before you say it is bad? I was very anti-Burger King but then me went there and me tried the Flame-Grilled Whopper and it was amazing” – Ali G to two anti-abortion protesters.
Sacha Baron Cohen’s first popular comic creation, the dim-witted yet often unintentionally insightful Ali G, often got a rise out of his interview subjects through his ill-informed questions, with his stupid questions often leading to similarly stupid answers. In this clip Ali G takes on the subject of abortion, invites a Reverend to bump his fist and laughs and leads the protest by shouting “free Nelson Mandela” over a megaphone.

Bruno Talks To Neo-Nazi's About Homosexuality
If you ever find yourself in a room with a group of drunk, neo-Nazi punks, a quick route to spending the night in a hospital is you politely inform them that you are gay. Likewise, if the guy to your right has spent the majority of your conversation raising his arm in a Hitler-esque salute, then you probably won’t make any new friends by asking him if he has ever masturbated on stage and then ejaculated over his audience.
The fact that Sacha Baron Cohen, under the guise of gay Austrian reporter ‘Bruno’, managed to escape from this interview unscathed is a huge miracle – almost as huge as the miracles dangling below his scrotum that give him the courage to do these kinds of things.

Borat Sings The National Anthem
We support your war of terror”, says Borat whilst standing in the middle of a rodeo arena, before telling the cheering crowd that his home country of Kazakhstan hopes George Bush “drinks the blood of every man, woman and child of Iraq.” Again, more cheers.
The cheering stops, however, when Borat sings his own rendition of the US national anthem that claims all other countries are inferior to Kazakhstan, the world’s number one supplier of potassium

Bruno Kisses A Man… During A Cage Fight
Cohen addressed the latent homoeroticism of cage fighting by hosting a cage fighting tournament entitled “Straight Dave’s Man Slammin’ Maxout” and then, just after the crowd have cheered his anti-“faggot” speech, invites a man into the cage, strips to his underwear and proceeds to kiss him. Inevitably, the crowd disapproves.

Human Trafficking

Human Trafficking

http://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/human-trafficking/what-is-human-trafficking.html

http://articles.latimes.com/2012/oct/30/local/la-me-prop35-20121031

http://www.examiner.com/article/the-controversy-over-prop-35-the-ban-on-human-trafficking-and-sex-slavery

Human Trafficking is not simple prostitution, it is where organized gangs take (usually) young girls from impoverished communities in one part of the world and send them overseas to act as what can only be described as enslaved prostitutes. The girls are usually encouraged to go with these men because they are told they can go to 'work', as maids or factory workers, or shop girls etc. They tend to be very poorly educated and simple and from country backgrounds. Once they leave their safe environment and family they are treated pretty much as slaves and bundled off in the back of vans and beaten up. Because they are illegal immigrants in the countries which they are transported to, plus they are watched and beaten up all the time by their pimps, they are trapped in a very desperate situation. This has even happened recently to a Western college girl - she managed to escape, but not immediately. Her case made the news. Obviously, the women do not get to keep the money they earn - it's taken off them by their handlers.

The question is asking you why Human Trafficking is bad. The answer is because it is a modern form of slavery (it used to be called the White Slave Trade and has always gone on, but it does involve women from all races). The prostitution issues are not relevant because the real problem is taking someone's liberty away and using their bodies to make money against their will.
